Our Story
The M1
In late 2006, the vision for what would become the M1 first took shape. As a lifelong knife collector, martial artist, and enthusiast, Robert W. Mottola set out to design something of his own — not for business, but for passion. With the guidance of expert knife maker Steve Woods, that vision became reality. What began as a small, private project quickly revealed something greater — and from that, Combative Edge was born.
Named After My First Customer
The first design needed a name. For Robert, the answer was deeply personal.
His grandfather, Adolfo Mottola, was the most influential person in his life — a man whose strength, values, and quiet leadership shaped Robert in ways words can never fully capture. Long before the first model had a name, Adolfo insisted he would be Robert's first customer. That belief carried Robert through every step of the journey.

Robert had the honor of being with his grandfather in his final moments — holding his hand, speaking to him, and guiding him through his last breaths with the same calm strength Adolfo had always shown him. That moment is something he carries every day.
Today, M1 Inizio represents a rebirth of that original vision — designed in the USA, crafted in Italy, honoring both heritage and legacy.
About Robert W. Mottola
Robert W. Mottola is a seasoned security professional whose career spans law enforcement, private and government contracting, and close protection operations. He served full-time in law enforcement and corrections, where he oversaw Defensive Tactics training and operated as both an instructor and member of a specialized Emergency Response Team. Today, he works as a Private and Government Security Contractor and Close Protection Agent.
Robert has been involved in rescue operations across multiple continents, working to assist children and adults affected by labor slavery and human trafficking. He is the founder of Salus Operational, a nonprofit that carries that mission forward — conducting rescue operations, supporting disaster relief efforts, and assisting with emergency management initiatives worldwide. He also serves on the Leadership, Business Development, and Public Image Committees of the Oldest Italian-American Organization in the United States, Founded in 1905, The Order Sons and Daughters of Italy in America (OSDIA).
Robert’s foundation is rooted in decades of martial arts training and instruction, with advanced ranks and certifications across multiple disciplines. He continues to teach through private seminars and courses throughout the World.
